যাত্রাপথে, নৌকা চলতে শুরু করলে পন্ডিত মাঝিকে কিছু প্রশ্ন করার সিদ্ধান্ত নিলেন কারণ, তিনি তাঁর জ্ঞানের ব্যাপকতার জন্য গর্বিত ছিলেন। তিনি মাঝিকে প্রশ্ন করলেন,”তুৃমি কি জানো,কেন সূর্য পূর্ব দিকে ওঠে এবং পশ্চিমে অস্ত যায়?” নৌকার মাঝি হাসি মুখে নেতিবাচক জবাবে বললেন, “আমি একজন সাধারণ মানুষ এবং এই বিষয় সম্পর্কে আমার কোন ধারণা নেই।
পন্ডিত কথাটি পাত্তা না দিয়ে বললেন, “তোমার জীবনের এক চতুর্থাংশ নষ্ট করলে”।
এমন জ্ঞান লাভ করা অনেক গুরুত্বপূর্ণ। কিছুক্ষন পর পন্ডিত আবার মাঝিকে জিজ্ঞাসা করলেন,“তোমার ভূগোল সম্পর্কে কোন জ্ঞান আছে? ”,বিশ্বের মানচিত্র নিয়ে তুমি কি পরেছ”?
নৌকার মাঝি আবারও নেতিবাচক জবাবে বললো, না আমি কখনো ভূগোল বিষয়ে শেখার সুযোগ পাইনি। পন্ডিত তার জ্ঞানের পাণ্ডিত্যে আত্মবিশ্বাসী ও সন্তুষ্ট হয়ে বললেন, “তোমার জীবনের অর্ধেক নষ্ট হয়ে গেছে ”।
কিছুক্ষণ, পর হঠাৎ আকাশে মেঘ জমতে শুরু করল।হঠাৎ ঝড় শুরু হলে,শান্ত নদীততে প্রবল ঢেউ হচ্ছিল। নৌকা আশংকাজনকভাবে দুলছিল। ভয়ার্ত পন্ডিত বুঝতে পারছিলেন তিনি সম্পুর্ণ অসহায়। নৌকার চালক সুনিপুণ কৌশলে নৌকা চালাচ্ছিল,এবং পন্ডিতের মলিন মুখ দেখা কারণ জিজ্ঞেস করল “আপনি কি সাঁতার জানেন? ”
